Overall Terry Review ~ 9.3 ⭐
This movie was remarkable and will likely win the Oscar for best picture. This was not a ‘Hollywood’ film. It looks and feels much different because it is. The director and team sculpted this film into an immersive 3.5-hour escape.
Story ~ ⭐ 9
The Brutalist is a man’s journey escaping one hell only to find a new one, but one with massive opportunity, a capitalistic society. This sounds rough, but there are so many emotional rides throughout the film, it works, and it’s great. Why a 9/10 for the story? It could have been a bit better; there were a few forced things, but it is a 9!

Adrien Brody should win an Oscar for this performance. He’s flawless. The supporting actors are wonderful too. Pearce has taken flak from some critics about his performance, and yes he is pretty one note, but the character calls for it (it’s written that way), he is The Brutalist. I’m not sure anyone keeps up with Brody, but the picture doesn’t need a second ‘ten’ performance with what he gives us.

The film is stunning, a perfect blend of the old world and fresh perspective. There is a welding shot/sequence that is absolutely beautiful to watch. They’ve made machinery, landscape, roadways and stone romantic in this film. This film (shot on actual film that gives it texture) is art, every bit of it, except the epilogue, which struggled a bit artistically.
Recommendation: See it in theater if possible; it’s worth it, and plan for a long one. There is an actual intermission in the film. It was fun and unique and needed.
